Helping You Regain Physical Movement After Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is the surgical method that helps in the treatment of problems of the knee joint. In this step, your doctor will create a small incision and then will insert a small camera (arthroscope) inside your knees. This helps the orthopedic surgeon to investigate the problem with the knee and use the necessary instruments to correct the problem. When rest, physical therapy, medications, and injection does not help in relieving your painful condition of knee then your doctor might recommend Knee arthroscopy. The arthroscopy is the best way to know about the cause of knee pain and treat it.

What sort of knee injuries Knee arthroscopy can treat?

This helps in diagnosing and treating knee injuries such as:
  • Torn meniscus
  • Removal of a baker’s cyst
  • Torn anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments
  • Patella that is out if the position
  • Pieces of torn cartilage loosely present in joint
  • Fracture in knee bones
  • Swollen Synovium

What preparations you should do pre-knee arthroscopy?

Before you jump into surgery, you must tell your doctor about OTC medicines, prescriptions, and supplements that you are using. Before this procedure, some medicines should be ceased for weeks and days. You have to refrain from drinking and eating prior to 6-12 hours before surgery.

How does the surgery begin?

Evaluations and Tests: Before undergoing surgery, your surgeon may recommend some tests such as blood tests and EKG. He or she may evaluate you before going for a surgery.
Instructions while admitting: You must let your orthopaedic surgeon know about the current medications you are taking. When you are healthy then your knee arthroscopy will be performed as an outpatient meaning you need not stay in the hospital for overnight. You have to follow instructions regarding your eating and drinking prior to surgery.
Anesthesia: Knee arthroscopy is done with local, general, and regional anesthesia. Your anesthesiologist will recommend the best method to choose.

About surgical procedure

Positioning: For prevention of surgical site infection, the knee is properly cleaned. The leg will be covered with surgical draping that exposes the incision site. Sometimes positioning device is placed over the knee to stabilize the knee.
Procedure: The procedure will start with some small incisions in your knee. The sterile solution is filled inside your knee joint so that your surgeon will see inside your knee clearly. Your surgeon will first insert arthroscope and see the image. If there is a requirement of surgical procedure, then only he or she will insert small instruments through other small incision.
Final Closure: Each incision will be closed with steri-strips, stitch, and also covers your knee with soft bandages. The time duration of surgery will depend on necessary treatments.

Post-surgery

Depending on the specific procedure, the time of procedure will take less than one hour. Mostly people are recommended to go on the same day of recovery. It is recommended to use ice packs over your knee which reduces the swelling and inflammation. Your doctor will ask you to have dressing after some days. He or she will give you an exercise regimen that should be followed at home. Those exercises are recommended to restore your motion. You need to have some lifestyle changes to protect your joint and those decisions should be made after discussing with your doctor. Higher impact exercises should be disallowed for a longer duration of time. Your doctor may check out your condition and accordingly, he or she may suggest arthroscopy that is the useful way to confirm the cause of pain and treat it with minimal incision. With proper care and guidance of your ortho surgeon, you would recover soon.
